The Hot End of the Valley
An Outdoor Builder Who Designs for Woodland Hills Heat
Woodland Hills sits at the western end of the San Fernando Valley, enclosed by the Santa Monica Mountains to the south and the Simi Hills to the west, and it is consistently among the hottest places in Los Angeles County. Summer afternoons here routinely run well past one hundred degrees with low humidity and relentless sun, and the surrounding hills hold that heat into the evening.
That is the governing fact of outdoor design here. A west-facing backyard without shade is unusable for a third of the year regardless of how well it is built. Line of Art Construction handles landscape, hardscape, shade structures, pools, and drainage as one scope, and in Woodland Hills every one of those decisions is made against the heat.

Designing Against the Heat
Shade, Surface, and Species
Three decisions determine whether a Woodland Hills outdoor space is lived in or merely looked at. None of them is about style.
We design around all three from the start:
Overhead
Shade Is the Highest-Value Build
A solid or louvred patio cover, a pergola, or a well-placed tree changes the usable hours of a Woodland Hills yard more than any material upgrade. Louvred systems let you keep low winter sun while excluding high summer sun, which at this end of the Valley is exactly the right trade.
Underfoot
Surface Temperature Decides Usability
Dark concrete, dense stone and dark composite decking absorb and re-radiate heat, and synthetic turf runs hotter still — a dark, dense turf in full Woodland Hills sun becomes genuinely unpleasant for bare feet and for dogs. Lighter paver tones, travertine, and ceramic-coated cooling infills stay usable.
Planting
Species and Water
Watering runs under day-of-week limits set by the water retailer, and evaporation here is among the highest in the county. Climate-appropriate planting and efficient irrigation keep the garden handsome without an unmanageable running cost.
Get shade, surface, and planting right and the property is usable most of the year rather than a third of it.

The Southern Hillsides
Flat Streets North, Real Grade South
Woodland Hills is two kinds of property. North of Ventura Boulevard the ground is largely flat and the work is conventional — shade, surfaces, pools, planting. South of the boulevard the land climbs into the Santa Monica Mountains toward Mulholland, and there almost every project becomes a grading, retaining, and drainage problem first. Much of that southern margin carries a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone designation.
On the hillside streets we build engineered retaining wall systems and terracing that convert slope into usable level ground, with drainage designed first: aggregate backfill, perforated collector, filter fabric, and a deliberate outlet. Many of these streets were cut decades ago with fill that is poorly documented by current standards, so geotechnical investigation is routine rather than optional. Defensible space is detailed so the result reads as a designed landscape rather than a cleared one.

How Projects Run Here
We are straightforward about what the work involves and where the money goes.
City of Los Angeles Permitting
Woodland Hills is City of Los Angeles and permits through LADBS, unlike neighbouring Calabasas and Hidden Hills which run their own departments. Retaining walls above the exempt height, grading past defined thresholds, drainage, pools, and gas and electrical work are all permitted and inspected. We coordinate that and confirm current requirements for the parcel.
Fire Zone Status
Whether the property sits in the southern hillside fire zone changes permitted materials for structures and decking and engages defensible space requirements around the house. We verify status with the local fire authority rather than assuming from the address.
Utilities Before Hardscape
Gas, water, and conduit for lighting or an outdoor kitchen go in before paving. Trenching them into a finished patio afterwards is the most avoidable cost on any project here.
Year-Round Outdoor Living
Pools, Patios, and Living Outside in Woodland Hills
Done properly, a Woodland Hills backyard is genuine additional living area for most of the year. The constraint is always heat, and every choice below is made with that in mind.
Pools and Spas
New construction and remodels. Deck material and colour matter unusually here, because a dark pool deck in Woodland Hills sun is not walkable barefoot in August.
Hardscape and Outdoor Kitchens
Paver, porcelain and stone terraces, plus outdoor kitchens with outdoor-rated refrigeration — a standard indoor unit fails early at the ambient temperatures these patios reach.
Backyard remodeling in Los Angeles →Patio Covers and Pergolas
The single highest-return structure on a Woodland Hills property, and usually the difference between a yard that gets used and one that does not.
Driveways
Flat-lot driveways are base depth and edge restraint; the hillside approaches south of the boulevard need grade transition and drainage engineering.
Driveway installation →Retaining Walls and Drainage
Engineered walls and terracing on the southern slopes, with drainage designed before the wall rather than added to it.
Turf and Water-Wise Planting
Specified for extreme inland exposure, where surface heat and UV behave nothing like they do nearer the coast.

See Your New Backyard Before It’s Built
We begin every project with a free consultation and a free 3D design, so you can see your future landscape rendered in detail before committing to anything.
In Woodland Hills the 3D step answers the question that decides the project: where the shade actually falls through a summer afternoon, and whether the seating and the pool deck are in it.

The Long View
The Long View
A Woodland Hills property built for the heat, drained for the storms, and detailed for its fire-zone status if it has one gets used most of the year and holds up for decades. That is worth doing once and doing correctly.
Line of Art Construction would be honored to be part of that work, building outdoor spaces that celebrate this extraordinary stretch of coastline while respecting what it has taught everyone about resilience.
Service Area
Serving Woodland Hills
We design and build across Woodland Hills, from the flats north of Ventura Boulevard to the hillside streets climbing toward Mulholland, including Warner Center, Walnut Acres, and the South of the Boulevard neighbourhoods, plus neighbouring Tarzana, West Hills, Canoga Park, Calabasas, and Hidden Hills.

Questions Woodland Hills Homeowners Ask Us
What is the single best thing to add to a Woodland Hills backyard?
Shade. This is one of the hottest parts of Los Angeles County, and a patio cover, pergola, or well-placed tree changes the number of usable hours more than any surface or planting choice. Everything else is secondary to it.
Is artificial turf a good idea here?
It can be, but it has to be specified for the exposure. Dark, dense turf in full Woodland Hills sun reaches surface temperatures that are unpleasant underfoot and for dogs. Lighter blade colours, ceramic-coated cooling infills, and above all shade over the area make the difference. In the hottest fully exposed zones, shaded hardscape often serves better than turf.
Is my property in a fire hazard zone?
The hillside streets south of Ventura Boulevard climbing toward the Santa Monica Mountains frequently are; the flats to the north generally are not. The designation changes permitted materials for structures and decking and engages defensible space requirements. We verify status with the local fire authority for the specific parcel.
Can you work alongside my architect or general contractor?
Yes. We coordinate with your architect and general contractor so outdoor construction sequences correctly with the house: driveway and flatwork after heavy equipment is done, planting and finish work last.
Do you handle permits in Woodland Hills?
Yes. Woodland Hills is City of Los Angeles and permits through LADBS, unlike neighbouring Calabasas and Hidden Hills which run their own departments. Retaining walls above the exempt height, grading, drainage, pools, and gas and electrical work are permitted and inspected. We coordinate that scope and confirm current requirements for your address.
Is the consultation and 3D design free?
Yes. Every project begins with a free consultation and a free 3D design, so you can see your future landscape rendered in detail before committing to anything.
