Backyards Built for Living
Sherman Oaks: The Neighborhood That Entertains
Spend a Saturday evening in Sherman Oaks and you'll hear it: the low hum of backyard gatherings drifting over fences from Ventura Boulevard up into the hills. This is a neighborhood that lives outside. Dinner parties on the patio, kids in the pool, movie nights under string lights. In Sherman Oaks, the backyard isn't landscaping, it's square footage.
Line of Art Construction designs and builds those backyards. We're an outdoor design-build firm headquartered minutes away in Van Nuys, and Sherman Oaks is one of our busiest service areas. Home values here reward serious outdoor investment, the housing stock spans everything from 1930s Spanish revivals to brand-new modern farmhouses, and the homeowners we meet come to us with a clear brief: make this yard somewhere we want to spend our time.

Flats and Hills
Two Sherman Oaks, Two Kinds of Projects
Sherman Oaks is really two terrains, and we build differently in each.
North of the Boulevard
The Flats: Full-Canvas Landscape Remodels
Between Ventura and Magnolia, lots are generally flat and rectangular: classic Valley parcels with room to work. These are our full-canvas projects, where we take a yard down to the soil and rebuild it as a composed outdoor environment. A typical flats project might combine a new paver or stone patio, a covered outdoor kitchen with a built-in grill and counter seating, a pool remodel or new pool, drought-tolerant planting with drip irrigation, low-voltage lighting, and a refreshed driveway and front yard so the whole property reads as one idea.

The Hills: Terraced Hillside Yards
Climb into Longridge Estates or the streets above Valley Vista and the lots tilt. Hillside properties come with slopes, views, and engineering requirements, and this is where our retaining wall expertise earns its keep. We terrace sloped yards into usable levels (a pool deck here, a dining terrace there, a view lounge above) with engineered walls, proper drainage, and stairs that feel intentional. A slope that currently offers nothing but ice plant can become three distinct outdoor rooms stacked toward a Valley view.
Our Sherman Oaks Services
What We Build Most in Sherman Oaks
Outdoor Kitchens and Entertaining Spaces
No service area of ours asks for outdoor kitchens more than Sherman Oaks. We build them properly: masonry structures, gas and electrical run to code, planned ventilation, stone or concrete counters, and shade structures overhead. The difference between a grill on wheels and a real outdoor kitchen is the difference between cooking outside occasionally and living outside all summer.
Pool Construction and Remodels
Many Sherman Oaks pools date to the 1950s–1970s. We modernize them with new plaster finishes, waterline tile, natural stone coping, energy-efficient variable-speed equipment, salt systems, and new decking that ties the pool into the rest of the yard. For new builds, we proportion the pool to the lot, from full-size family pools in the flats to spools and plunge pools on tighter hillside pads.
Privacy Landscaping
Sherman Oaks lots sit close together, and privacy is a near-universal request. We solve it with layered planting (podocarpus and ficus hedging, strategic trees, and screen walls) designed so your yard feels enclosed and calm without feeling boxed in.
Driveways and Motor Courts
From ribbon driveways on Spanish-era homes to wide paver motor courts fronting new construction, we replace cracked, root-heaved concrete with surfaces built on compacted engineered base and drained correctly.
Driveway installation →Retaining Walls and Hillside Terracing
Engineered walls with proper drainage that turn sloped hillside lots into usable, level outdoor rooms, built to satisfy Los Angeles hillside requirements.

Practical Realities We Handle for You
Los Angeles Permits
Pools, retaining walls, covered structures, and electrical and gas lines all require Los Angeles permits, and hillside lots add their own review layers. We handle all of it.
Just Over the 101
Our office is just over the 101 in Van Nuys, so we work with the local Building and Safety office constantly and keep the paperwork moving while you go about your life.
Designed for Valley Climate
Full summer sun means shade structures aren't decoration here, they're infrastructure. And irrigation must be efficient, because water in Los Angeles only gets more expensive.

Free Consultation + Free 3D Design
Design First, Always
Every Sherman Oaks project starts the same way: a free in-person consultation and a free 3D design. We walk your property, talk about how you entertain, how much maintenance you honestly want, and what you love and hate about the current yard. Then we model your new outdoor space in 3D, so you can move the outdoor kitchen, swap the fire pit for a fire table, or test a different paver tone in the rendering, where changes are free, instead of during construction, where they aren't.
Sherman Oaks projects often combine a pool, kitchen, hardscape, planting, and lighting that have to work as a whole. Hiring separate contractors for each piece is how yards end up feeling stitched together. We design and build everything as one project under one accountable team.

An Investment That Shows Up in the Appraisal
Sherman Oaks real estate is competitive, and finished outdoor space is one of the features buyers here consistently pay for. Listings in this neighborhood lead with backyard photos for a reason.
A well-executed outdoor remodel does two jobs at once: it upgrades your daily life now and strengthens your property's position later. Few home improvements can claim both.
